More job cuts announced

Support and Administrative staff were called to a meeting at 2pm today.

Richard Evans, the Dean of Lifelong Learning, flanked by Human Resources apparatchiks, announced restructuring proposals for support staff.
There will be fewer posts. Support staff will be forced to compete for the remaining posts whenever there is more than one person with the relevant skills. Some posts are shrinking to part time.

Many staff left the meeting feeling extemely upset. This is not how we want to celebrate International Workers Day. It's not how we want to start our Bank Holiday weekend. But it IS the beginning of a sustained campaign to save jobs and preserve educational opportunities in south Wales.

  1. We have a common cause, whether we are students, tutors, academic or support staff. We MUST save our courses in Humanities and Welsh.
The alternatives are too awful to contemplate.

Come to the open meeting at Lifelong Learning at 7pm on Tuesday 5th May. Together, we can make a difference!

For me, today was the saddest day of the campaign so far. My colleagues in the Support staff were summoned to a meeting at 2pm. I'm told that HR didn't arrive until 2.15. So they were left waiting, knowing that any news would only be bad.

One of the strengths of the Centre for Lifelong learning is our collegiate, communal ethos. It goes very much against the grain for people to be told that they now have to compete against their friends if they want to get the chance to keep their job. No wonder that many of them are heartbroken this weekend.
